While Ligue 1 has established itself as one of Europe’s “Big Five,” it has been unfairly labeled as a “farmers’ league” by some. It’s an unfair accusation, because three of the world’s best players play in the division, and many more have accomplished great things before moving on.
Ligue 1 has 20 teams competing for the title of champion. A season consists of 38 matches played between mid-August and the following May, allowing each club to play each other club twice: once at home and once away. However, the current system will be phased out after this season, with the league being reduced to 18 teams the following season.
